The
United States has always been a nation on the move. Ours is a
culture
that spawned the fast food restaurant
and even the drive-through
chapel. As a people we are dri
ven.
Increasingly, we are consumed by the push to multi-task and crowd more and more
activity into less and less time.
Being a nation consumed by urgency has its price. The 1999 report “Mental
Health: A Report of the Surgeon General” notes that 16.4% of adults will
experience symptoms of an anxiety disorder in a given year.
The philosophy of the Cleveland Psychoanalytic Center is that people have minds,
that their experiences are important and that they can
best be helped by understanding themselves. The Center’s mission is to support
psychoanalysis and the many forms of insight-oriented therapy that derive from
it, for the benefit of the community.
Like most things worth having, knowing one’s self takes time. The Center’s
primary work is to train helping professionals to work more effectively with
people. Through its accredited four year Psychoanalyst Training Program and its
two year
Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Program, the Center helps practicing therapists to
bring this person-centered approach to their work.
The Center houses an extensive collection of books and journals available to
professionals and the public. It conducts Extension
programs, collaborates with other organizations and
hosts seminars open to the mental health and general community.
Just as the Center is part of the community, the community is part of the
Center. An active Friends group hosts film discussions and special events. A
newsletter and website keep the community informed about the activities of the
Center.
Please
join in our effort to continue helping people
to understand themselves. Please support the
Cleveland Psychoanalytic Center.
